jayandcorey  > Travel > Machu Picchu-Peru-December 2004 > Inca Trail day 3 - Christmas Eve
We diverted from the beaten path to a side trail that gave us a view of the city from the backside. When we finally got to our campsite, our guide asked if we wanted to see Machu Picchu from the Sun Gate as the sun was setting. Half of our group stayed behind, but I'm glad we went. We got some great shots, and had a taste of what we'd see the next day. Besides, the next morning it was cloudy, and you couldn't even see the city until you got there.

jayandcorey > This was the view of the Cordillera Vilcabamba at 5:30 am. Most of those peaks are over 19,000 ft.
jayandcorey > Here's our group: 16 trekkers, 23 porters, and 1 cook. We also had 2 guides, who were taking the photos.
jayandcorey > We took a side trail to see what all of the inca ruins looked like when they were "discovered". This was a small ruin.
jayandcorey > Remember that this ruin has been partially cleaned up already. The "windows" are niches for placing idols and sacred artifacts.
jayandcorey > Just another spectacular mountain view.
jayandcorey > At Puyupatamarca, the last major temple site before Machu Picchu (there are two more big ruins near our last campsite).
jayandcorey > Leaving Puyupatamarca. Near the center of the photo is the beginning of the "2000 steps" that lead down to the campsite. I'm glad we took this alternate route.
jayandcorey > The side trail we took was considerably less traveled, but all the more beautiful because of it. We're back in the cloud forest here.
jayandcorey > Machu Picchu from the back side. I cried for a few kilometers thinking about how lucky I am to have Jay help me realize this dream.
